Tropical Cyclone Statement issued September 26 at 11:22PM EDT by NWS Key West FL HLSKEY This product covers the Florida Keys **TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS PERSIST OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS** NEW INFORMATION --------------- * CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - None * CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Monroe Lower Keys, Monroe Middle Keys, and Monroe Upper Keys * STORM INFORMATION: - About 390 miles north-northwest of Key West FL or about 400 miles north-northwest of Marathon FL - 29.9N 83.9W - Storm Intensity 140 mph - Movement North-northeast or 15 degrees at 24 mph SITUATION OVERVIEW ------------------ As of 11 PM EDT, Hurricane Helene was centered about 390 miles to the north northwest of Key West and is now making landfall in Florida's Big Bend region. Helene continues to move north- northeastward at 24 mph. A gradual turn to the north and west of north is expected overnight followed by a turn northwestward and slow down over the Tennessee Valley on Friday and Saturday. Helene's wind field is unusually large with tropical storm force winds extending very far from the center and frequent tropical storm wind gusts continue to affect the Florida Keys. Despite Helene nearing landfall in the Big Bend, frequent wind gusts to 40 to 45 mph will continue in the Keys over the next few hours. Winds will trend downwards through the overnight. While banding has remained well away from the Keys through the evening, relegated to our westernmost zones, further convective development cannot be completely ruled out. Expect locally stronger wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph within any squalls. Storm surge flooding of 1 to 3 feet above ground level, or mean higher high water, is expected in the Florida Keys through the overnight period given the continued strong onshore breezes and antecedent tidal levels. As a result, a Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect. On the Atlantic side, the saltwater flooding will likely approach the peak levels observed at this morning's high tide. On the Gulfside, confidence is high for an extended period of some saltwater flooding overnight, particularly in the trapped Florida Bay area. POTENTIAL IMPACTS ----------------- * WIND: Potential impacts from the main wind event are now unfolding across the Florida Keys. Remain well sheltered from hazardous wind having additional limited impacts. If realized, these impacts include: - Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about. - Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped or uprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees are shallow rooted. Some fences and roadway signs blown over. - A few roads impassable from debris, particularly within urban or heavily wooded places. Hazardous driving conditions on bridges and other elevated roadways. - Scattered power and communications outages. * SURGE: Potential impacts from the main surge event are now unfolding across along the Florida Keys. Remain well away from locally hazardous surge having additional limited impacts. If realized, these impacts include: - Localized inundation with storm surge flooding mainly along immediate shorelines and in low-lying spots, or in areas farther inland near where higher surge waters move ashore. - Sections of roads and parking lots inundated by surge water. Driving conditions dangerous in places where surge water covers the road. - Moderate beach erosion. - Minor to locally moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers. A few small craft broken away from moorings. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS ---------------------------------- * OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION: Keep your cell phone charged and in power-saving mode. If you lose power, use it sparingly and mainly for personal emergencies and check- ins. If you are prone to flooding be prepared for the possibility of a quick and dramatic rise in water levels. * ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION: - For Monroe County Emergency Management Information, see monroecountyem.com - For information on appropriate preparations see ready.gov - For additional disaster preparedness information see redcross.org - For Florida Division of Emergency Management information, see floridadisaster.org NEXT UPDATE ----------- The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather Service in Key West FL around 500 AM EDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.

Coastal Flood Warning issued September 26 at 5:23PM EDT until September 27 at 12:00AM EDT by NWS Key West FL * WHAT...The persistent tropical storm force winds will continue to exacerbate coastal flooding across the Florida Keys through late this evening. These winds, combined with persistent positive anomalies and high tide, will result in storm surge flooding of 1 to 3 feet above ground level. For reference, the recent King Tides reached 1.5 feet above mean higher high water. On the Atlantic side, the saltwater flooding will likely approach the peak levels observed at this morning's high tide. On the Gulfside, confidence is high in an extended period of some saltwater flooding this evening, although there continues to be quite a bit of uncertainty in the expected water levels. * WHERE...The Florida Keys. * WHEN...Through late this evening. * IMPACTS...Storm surge flooding will cause numerous roads to be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure will be inundated. Flooding may extend over streets and low elevation properties a few blocks from the shoreline. Some shoreline erosion will occur. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
