Tropical Cyclone Statement issued September 26 at 5:49PM EDT by NWS Key West FL HLSKEY This product covers the Florida Keys **Tropical Storm Conditions Ongoing** NEW INFORMATION --------------- * CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - None * CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Monroe Lower Keys, Monroe Middle Keys, and Monroe Upper Keys * STORM INFORMATION: - About 290 miles northwest of Key West FL or about 310 miles northwest of Marathon FL - 27.9N 84.6W - Storm Intensity 125 mph - Movement North-northeast or 25 degrees at 23 mph SITUATION OVERVIEW ------------------ As of 5 PM EDT, Hurricane Helene was centered about 290 miles to the northwest of Key West, and is moving to the north-northeast at 23 mph. This motion is expected to continue through this evening. On the forecast track, Helene will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and make landfall as a major hurricane along the Big Bend coast of Florida. After landfall, Helene is expected to turn northwestward and slow down over the Tennessee Valley on Friday and Saturday. Helene has an unusually large wind field, with tropical storm force winds extending out 310 miles east of the center. Episodic squalls will continue overnight. These squalls will be capable of damaging wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph, along with an isolated tornado or two. Outside of squalls, sustained tropical storm force winds near 40 mph are expected across the Keys through this evening, with the greatest chances for these sustained winds in the Lower Keys. Winds will gradually decrease by late this evening. Storm surge flooding of 1 to 3 feet above ground level, or mean higher high water, is expected in the Florida Keys through this evening, and a Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect. On the Atlantic side, the saltwater flooding will likely approach the peak levels observed at this morning's high tide. On the Gulfside, confidence is high in an extended period of some saltwater flooding this evening, although there continues to be quite a bit of uncertainty in the expected water levels. POTENTIAL IMPACTS ----------------- * WIND: Potential impacts from the main wind event are now unfolding across the Florida Keys. Remain well sheltered from hazardous wind having additional limited impacts. If realized, these impacts include: - Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about. - Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped or uprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees are shallow rooted. Some fences and roadway signs blown over. - A few roads impassable from debris, particularly within heavily wooded places. Hazardous driving conditions on bridges and other elevated roadways. - Scattered power and communications outages. * SURGE: Potential impacts from the main surge event are now unfolding across the Lower Keys. Remain well away from locally hazardous surge having additional limited impacts. If realized, these impacts include: - Localized inundation with storm surge flooding mainly along immediate shorelines and in low-lying spots. - Sections of roads and parking lots inundated by surge water. Driving conditions dangerous in places where surge water covers the road. - Moderate beach erosion. - Minor to locally moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers. A few small craft broken away from moorings. * TORNADOES: Potential impacts from tornadoes are still unfolding across the Florida Keys. Remain well braced against a tornado event having possible limited impacts. If realized, these impacts include: - The occurrence of isolated tornadoes can hinder the execution of emergency plans during tropical events. - A few places may experience tornado damage, along with power and communications disruptions. - Locations could realize roofs peeled off buildings, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, large tree tops and branches snapped off, shallow-rooted trees knocked over, moving vehicles blown off roads, and small boats pulled from moorings. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS ---------------------------------- * OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION: Keep your cell phone charged and in power-saving mode. If you lose power, use it sparingly and mainly for personal emergencies and check- ins. If a tornado warning is issued for your area, quickly move to the safest place within your shelter. Protect your head and body. * ADDITIONAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION: - For Monroe County Emergency Management Information, see monroecountyem.com - For information on appropriate preparations see ready.gov - For additional disaster preparedness information see redcross.org - For Florida Division of Emergency Management information, see floridadisaster.org NEXT UPDATE ----------- The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather Service in Key West FL around 12 AM EDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.
