Heat Advisory issued July 18 at 7:50AM EDT until July 18 at 7:00PM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC * WHAT...Heat index values around 105 expected. * WHERE...Washington DC, and portions of central, northern, and southern Maryland, and central and northern Virginia. * WHEN...From 11 AM this morning to 7 PM EDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke, call 9 1 1.

Air Quality Alert issued July 17 at 4:40PM EDT by NWS Baltimore MD/Washington DC The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code ORANGE Air Quality Alert Saturday for the Baltimore City Metro and Annapolis region. Concentrations of fine particulate matter due to wildfire smoke will persist at levels consistent with an Air Quality Index of Unhealthy (Red Alert) to Very Unhealthy (Purple Alert) Friday night into Saturday morning. Air quality begins to improve Saturday afternoon. Code Purple and Code Red Air Quality Alerts mean that air pollution concentrations within the region are unhealthy to very unhealthy for the general population. A Code Orange Air Quality Alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.
