Air Quality Alert issued July 18 at 7:05AM EDT by NWS Charleston WV West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection - Air Quality Division has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for Fine Particulates for West Virgina until midnight EDT tonight. Elevated fine particulate matter levels are anticipated to drop as the day goes on today. A code Orange air quality alert means members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is less likely to be affected, but sensitive groups should take additional precautions. These groups include children, the elderly, and people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise or strenuous activity. Check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency`s www.AirNow.gov website for current air monitor readings.

North Central Gilmer County in north central West Virginia... Southern Doddridge County in northern West Virginia... Southwestern Harrison County in northern West Virginia... Northwestern Lewis County in northern West Virginia... Southeastern Ritchie County in northwestern West Virginia... * Until 715 PM EDT. * At 418 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Harrisville, Salem, Jackson Mill, Ellenboro, Pullman, Auburn, Grove, Leopold, New Milton, Blandville, Avon, Coxs Mills, Greenwood, Berea, Newberne, Camden and Burnt House. This includes Route 50 in West Virginia near mile marker 37...and between mile markers 43 and 46...and near mile marker 48. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Report flooding to the National Weather Service by calling toll free, 800 401 9535, when you can do so safely.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Locations impacted include... Harrisville, Salem, Pennsboro, West Union, Mineralwells, North Bend State Park, Ellenboro, Cairo, Pullman, Auburn, Alma, Smithville, Maxwell, Newberne, Mountain, Lima, Hebron, Pike, Center Point, and Sedalia. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
